There are several very important changes going into effect in the coming year.
The Associate Safety Professional® (ASP) will become a certification later this year. ASPs and ASP candidates will be supported as this change is implemented, as detailed in information recently shared (see document below).
The Safety Trained Supervisor® (STS) will also undergo a transformation. BCSP is no longer offering the STS-Mining and STS-Petrochemical examinations, and the STS-Construction is in the process to become a unique certification. The STS will continue to represent STS-General Industry. The new supervisory certification, the Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC), will continue the program’s success in promoting safety in construction. See below article.
AGC Endorses BCSP Certifications – The Associated General Contractors of America Endorses BCSP Certifications

Champaign, IL – The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) has recently endorsed the use of safety certification for the protection of workers on construction sites, acknowledging the effectiveness of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals’ (BCSP) Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) and Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certifications in particular.
“Many of our safest member firms use the CHST and STS as part of their programs,” said Kevin Cannon, CSP, AGC Director of Safety and Health Services. “The records of these companies speak to the certifications’ effectiveness, and they consistently appear as top AGC/Willis Construction Safety Excellence Award (CSEA) winners.”
In the last three years, BCSP STS Sponsors, Clark Construction Company, Gilbane Building Company, Sturgeon Electric Company, Flatiron Construction Corporation, and URS Energy and Construction have each won First Place CSEA awards, with URS also receiving the honor of Grand Award.
“Several BCSP Diamond Class STS Sponsors – organizations employing over 100 or more STSs – report positive results and improved worksites from utilizing the certification,” according to Dr. Treasa Turnbeaugh, CSP, CET, BCSP CEO. The success of using the certification programs is evident; URS saw an 88 percent reduction in workers’ compensation claims and injuries, Hensel Phelps Construction reports sustaining zero accidents since 2008, and Clark Construction has enhanced subcontractor relationships and seen increased compliance with OSHA and safety program standards.
Many of these companies will be present at AGC’s Safety and Health Conference, which will take place in Denver, Colorado July 10-12, 2013; individuals are encouraged to ask about using certification to improve their own organization’s safety programs.
